🌆 A Fresh Stadium Dream for City Centre

Mayor Carolyn Parrish is still championing the idea of a new soccer stadium in Mississauga’s City Centre, reminding residents that land north of Square One is already lined up. She says the project is more affordable than many expect, thanks to a pre-fabricated design, and could help attract a professional team in the years ahead.

Beyond the sports angle, she believes the stadium could breathe new life into the downtown core. Many residents are still unsure the city can support a pro team, but the hope is that growing interest in soccer and future community events will make the venue a lively gathering spot.

🏘️ GTA Home Sales Slow as Buyers Hold Back

Home sales across the Greater Toronto Area dipped in November, with fewer listings and lower prices showing just how cautious buyers are feeling. The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board reported just over 5,000 homes sold, which is a noticeable drop from last year, along with an average price decline to just over one million dollars.

Many families want to take advantage of better borrowing conditions, but worries about job security are keeping them on the sidelines. Fewer new listings came on the market, yet overall inventory still grew, leaving plenty of homes available as the market continues to adjust.

🕯️ Echoes of Elmbank Beneath Pearson’s Runways

Elmbank - Elmbank Schoolhouse, c1920.

Many people are surprised to learn that Pearson Airport was built over the old hamlet of Elmbank, a place once filled with farm families, small shops, and a deeply rooted Catholic community. As Elizabeth De Curtis beautifully explains in her original work, the village slowly disappeared, yet its cemetery remained tucked between runways for decades, a quiet survivor of changing times.

When the airport expanded, those early settlers were respectfully relocated to Assumption Cemetery. Today, their resting place offers a peaceful reminder of the community that helped shape Mississauga’s earliest days, long before jets ever touched the sky.

🏡 New Partnership Opens Doors for Mississauga Families

Mississauga has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin on a new partnership that aims to create more affordable homes for local families. The first step is the addition of five Habitat home ownership units at Edenshaw’s Alba building near Cooksville GO, made possible through a community benefits contribution that helped Habitat purchase the units at a discount.

This model connects non profits with developers who have near ready units, giving families access to mortgages that fit their income and long term affordability built right in. Early results from similar Habitat projects show families thrive once they settle in, with stronger finances and improved wellbeing. It is an encouraging step toward helping more residents put down roots in our community.
